Theater Courses Offered for Credit:

Honors Theater Arts

Level 1 offered to Juniors
Level 2 offered to Seniors

A comprehensive college level course that guides students through the many facets of the world of theater and makes frequent stops along the way.  This course examines the audition process,  teaches students monologue preparation (including an intensive weekly Monologue Bootcamp), script analysis, character analysis and the development of  an understanding of the human psyche as it relates to acting. It also examines the technical elements of theater and guides students through an in depth study of Shakespeare and some of the great acting teachers of our time. The final unit focuses on the production elements.  For their final project, seniors sit in the driver's seat and direct their own production for the "Senior Black Box." Senior directors choose a play, hold auditions, cast the show, create a prompt book, block the show and direct rehearsals. Senior Black Box Projects are invaluable as senior students have the opportunity to apply what they have learned within the Red Bank Catholic Performing Arts Program and have a tangible product that is completely their own.

Fall Drama  and  Spring Musical

Each year, Red Bank Catholic presents two main stage productions: the Fall Drama and the Spring Musical.  RBC Performing Arts proudly participates each year in the Basie Awards and Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Awards, to enable our students to have the opportunity to be recognized for their achievements on the historic Broad Street Auditorium stage.  These productions offer many opportunities for students to participate both onstage and behind the scenes.

After School Theater

Our After School Theater Program is a club offered to Freshmen and Sophomores that meets once a week after school from September to January. After School Theater is our version of Theater 101. Students learn the basics of acting: pantomime, improv, basic scene work, etc... Students who participate in After School Theater have the opportunity to perform scenes they've worked on each week in our annual "Coffee House Cabaret.”

Senior Black Box Projects

“Black Box,” the final project for seniors who take Honors Theater Arts, is also an opportunity for any RBC student to perform under the direction of fellow students. This is possibly one of the most valuable and rewarding experiences for our students, and is a great exposure to theater for those who have little or no experience.  Most go on to audition for the Fall Drama and Spring Musical the following year.  Senior directors conduct auditions for their own show. They give a breakdown of the play and characters, then ask the students to cold read with scene partners at random. After casting their shows, the seniors coordinate and conduct rehearsals with their cast, and are responsible for every aspect of production, culminating in Black Box Performance Night, held in the RBC Fine and Performing Arts Building.
