Kayla Collymore instructing RBC Dancers
The RBC Dance Department welcomed back three alumnae from the Class of 2008 in recent weeks who were happy to return to the place where their successful dance careers got started. Jen Bermeo, Kelly Stevens and Kayla Collymore visited the RBC Cultural Center and taught workshops for current RBC dancers. They also shared stories and advice about how they turned their love of dancing into fulfilling and successful careers. Students were captivated by the presentations that included stories about world travel and performances in major cultural events like the Super Bowl!
Kayla Collymore has danced her way around the world with an international tour to Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia, and also spent a year with the Hou Ying Dance Theater. She worked with the RBC students to help choreograph pieces for their upcoming dance concert in May. Reflecting on her time at RBC, Kayla said, “Little did I know that by having the opportunity to dance every day and be a part of RBC Dance Company I was preparing for my current lifestyle. Mrs. Bascom made sure we were versatile dancers, always kept the joy in movement, and taught me how to write a professional resume which has proven to be one of the most important tools in this industry.”
Jennifer Bermeo spoke to the students about the business side of the entertainment industry and how hard she had to work to find opportunities to pursue. Students were very impressed with her resume. In addition to her recent halftime appearance in Super Bowl LII, Jennifer appeared on television alongside Terry Crews in Lip Sync Battle, on film in Ted 2 and Trolls as well as award shows including the BET Awards, the GRAMMYs, the EMMYs with James Corden, Stephen Colbert, and Rachel Bloom, and she has appeared in commercials representing major American corporations. Reflecting on her time at RBC Jen said, “I fell in love with musical theater because of RBC dance. I loved learning about all the great musical theater icons and performing repertoire they inspired. I am so grateful to RBC Dance for preparing me for my career. The program was a big reason I went to RBC.”
Kelly Stevens worked for cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean and Holland America that took her to over 25 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa. She has also performed at major corporate events and award shows.
The RBC Dance Program continues its mission to inspire students to follow their dreams of pursuing successful professional careers doing something they love.
